What is a typing test?

A typing test measures how quickly and accurately you can reproduce a passage of text. This online typing test compares each character you enter with the prompt, then updates your WPM, accuracy, and errors while you type. Your results stay in your browser, so you can practise without an account.

How is WPM calculated?

WPM means words per minute. The standard calculation treats five characters as one word: divide the number of typed characters by five, then divide by the number of minutes elapsed. For example, 250 characters typed in one minute equals 50 WPM. This convention makes results easier to compare across passages of different word lengths.

What is a good typing speed?

A useful typing speed depends on the kind of work you do and how accurately you type. Instead of chasing a universal benchmark, use repeated typing speed tests to compare your own results. A steady improvement in WPM alongside strong accuracy is a practical sign that your technique is becoming more reliable.

How to improve your typing speed

  • Learn the home-row positions and let each finger return there naturally.
  • Prioritise accurate keystrokes before trying to type faster.
  • Keep your eyes on the screen instead of looking down at the keyboard.
  • Practise in short, consistent sessions that are easy to repeat.
  • Use your results to identify which part of your technique needs attention.

Why accuracy matters

Fast typing that creates frequent corrections can interrupt your rhythm and cost more time overall. Accuracy shows the share of characters you entered correctly, which is why it should be considered together with WPM. A good typing test result is not simply a high number; it is speed you can reproduce with control.

How to use your typing test results

Take the same duration more than once and look for patterns rather than judging a single attempt. If your WPM rises while accuracy drops, slow down slightly and aim for cleaner keystrokes. If your accuracy is strong but your speed feels unchanged, practise short sessions with the home row and common letter combinations. The progress panel saves recent results in your browser, making it easier to compare a week of focused practice with your previous baseline.
